The brief
Raise, the charity supporting West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, launched the Raise a Rainbow appeal during the coronavirus pandemic, funding spaces for rest and wellbeing support for staff and patients across every trust site. ICU matron Vicky Houghton said community donations “enable us to give support where it is most needed”, while Raise’s charity director Sofia Sheikh said the appeal would help relieve the pressure the pandemic had placed on patients and staff alike.
The brief demanded real emotional honesty rather than a polished ask, donors needed to feel why the campaign mattered, not just be told the target figure.
The finished film needed to work across the charity’s own fundraising channels, holding up alongside campaigns from much larger organisations.
The approach
Working to a genuinely concise brief, the priority was making every second count, a fundraising film has no room for a slow build.
Rather than a generic charity appeal, the aim was a film that helped donors understand:
- Why the campaign existed and who it genuinely helped
- What a donation would actually go towards
- The real, human stories behind the fundraising target
- Why giving now genuinely mattered
A concise, emotive campaign film was built around real stories, produced at charity-friendly rates in recognition of the sector it was serving.
Production
The project involved building genuine emotional weight into a genuinely short runtime. This included:
- Structuring the film around real stories rather than statistics alone
- Filming with genuine sensitivity, given the personal nature of the subject matter
- Keeping the final cut concise, respecting how little time a fundraising audience actually gives a video
- Producing the whole project at charity-friendly rates
- Delivering a film ready to support the campaign’s own fundraising channels
Throughout, the priority was letting the real stories speak for themselves rather than over-producing something that needed to feel genuinely honest.
The result
The finished film gave Raise a genuine campaign asset that helped the Raise a Rainbow appeal connect with donors and raise its profile.
It helped turn a fundraising target into something people could actually feel invested in, exactly what a charity campaign needs from its video content.
By combining genuine emotional honesty with charity-conscious pricing, the project showed that fundraising content does not need a big budget to be genuinely effective.
Why this project worked
This project shows what a concise, genuinely emotive film can do for a charity campaign, connecting with donors in a way a fundraising page alone rarely manages.
